I thought it might be an idea to have a thread for posting/linking to tutorials, advice, and anything else useful relating to art, design and other creative stuff.
Rather than critiquing specific images, I thought it might be useful if we had a general thread for stuff like colour and anatomy guides, as well as anything else that might be useful to the budding artist.
When you're posting, try to be as descriptive as possible about the link you're posting, so that we can find it later. And if anything there is, or might be, Not Safe For Work, let us know.
My posts will probably involve a lot of tumblr links, just a warning to those who get sucked in easily. Anything I post from tumblr, will be safe for work in that specific post (unless I say otherwise), but I can't vouch for the rest of whichever blog they're posted on.
Here goes.
First, a couple of general websites relating to anatomy.
Posemaniacs uses rotatable 3D models which you can use as reference or just for figure practice. The anatomy, (and a lot of the poses) are quite comic-book, so take it's not ideal, but it does come in handy for checking foreshortening and perspective. The "30 second sketch" tool is pretty handy. The models are naked, but they're also muscle-toned, so I don't think anybody could mistake it for porn. Use your discretion on the work-safe-ness. (That is totally a word. >.>)
Eschergirls is a tumblr, blog dedicated to godawful anatomy from industry professionals who really should know better. The main intent of the blog is to show just how badly warped the anatomy of female anime characters and superheroes often gets in an attempt to make them "sexy." With that in mind, some of the content is very much Not Safe For Work. I'm linking this here because I personally have learned a lot from watching the likes of Rob Liefeld get it so horribly wrong. Occasionally, the readers will post re-draws of particularly bad/hilarious poses, with the anatomy fixed.
Now, onto more specific tutorials.
First, this awesome composition tutorial, for both photographers and illustrators. It mentions both the Golden Spiral and the Rule of Thirds.
Next, a colouring tutorial! The focus is on colour theory rather than lighting, and it goes into colouring for moods and emotions. There is a little bit of sweary-ness on the layout.
Some figure references for more varied figures. The people in these photos are all athletic, but they're still a bunch of shapes and sizes, so it's pretty good for those of you draw action/adventure stuff.
Building Blocks! That is to say, good anatomy starting with the skeleton and building outwards, as well as general shapes and blocks. There are focus pages on hands and faces too. And here are some female torsos.
A few pages on skirts. Including different types of skirts, frills, and folds. The text is in Japanese but the images are clear enough.
And a few super-quick ones to finish;
Legs and Knees
Foreshortening
Feathers
Hands
One on skintone, which is safe for work but may make you cry with envy. And a (more cartoony) Korra-specific one for those who are interested.
A two-point perspective tutorial for those who have photoshop.
And finally (for today) Wally Wood's 22 Panels That Always Work.
That was about half of the stuff I have bookmarked. I'll make another post later on 'cause I don't want to info-dump everyone.
Edit: For the writers among you. 102 Resources For Fiction Writing. Some of which is almost certainly adaptable to comics writing. (Though personally I would take the Mary Sue Litmus Test with a pinch of salt, but that's a whole other post right there.)
Edit the Second: I just remembered. Tumblr links are prone to up and die occasionally, so if you see anything you really want to keep, make sure you save it.
